<hi style=afpcap>Originally designated the O-49, production of the Vigilant had ceased prior to the type becoming the L-1. The Vigilant was an observation aircraft, although it was largely superseded by much smaller types such as the Grasshopper. The L-1 served in Europe and the Pacific theatres, as well as being supplied to the RAF under Lend-Lease arrangements. The L-1E version, depicted, was modified for ambulance duties with the fitment of floats, which were replaced by skis for operations during the winter months in certain parts of the United States. </hi>
